In Greek mythology, the goddess of love was Aphrodite, who was born from the sea foam. According to the ancient Greek lyric poet Anacreon, a white rose covered her body when she was born.
The rose remained white until Aphrodite learned that Adonis, her beloved, was in danger. As she rushed to warn him, a rosebush scratched her and drops of blood turned its soft white petals red.
